    Half Moon Bay to Zietgeist

On my last ride post I had come from the South Bay over to the Coast just South of Half Moon Bay and headed South to take in some of the State Beaches.
This time I decided to go over to the coast and making a run up Hwy 1 from Half Moon Bay to the city (SF) and eventually to a pub called the Zietgeist. A group of ADVrider forum riders were meeting up for a little social get together.

It was still chilly when I left, about 45 degrees. But this was nothing like it had been several days before when temps started in the high 20’s and topped out in the low 40’s.
I made post haste getting to the coast by taking Hwy 280 from the South Bay to Hwy 92 to Half Moon Bay and then Hwy 1. (called Cabrillo Hwy from Big Basin Redwoods State Park to Daly City )

Not long after heading North on Hwy 1 you get to Miramar where you can see a large land mass with a radar dome on top of it when you look to the North-west..
This area is called Pillar Point.
    IMG_4448 sm.jpg

Just on the west side of Pillar Point is where they hold the famous Mavrick’s Surfing Contest.

Here’s a couple of pictures I took at last years (2006) competition.
    Kinda small wave (for Mavricks)
    P2070401 adj sm.jpg

Little bigger and the contest is on!

    Chopper cam moving in.

    Nice Wave!
    P2070413 adj sm.jpg

These big waves are just spectacular to see.

Too bad they have closed off the area I was at to get these shots last year.
OK… enough reminiscing. Back to this ride.

Just a little North of HMB is a small enclave called Miramar.
If you take a left on Medio or Magellan Rd you get to Mirada which fronts the ocean.
These photo’s are of a unique house near the end of the road on Mirada.
    IMG_4451 sm.jpg

    IMG_4452 sm.jpg

Cool architecture. Time to move on though.

From Miramar I continued North on Hwy 1 passing The Half Moon Bay airport where the large fleet of police cars almost immediately catch your eye. Not to worry though.
This is where regional agencies train their officers in advanced driving and pursuit car handling.

Not to far after the airport you get to another small coastal town called Montara.
If you look closely on the west side of Hwy 1 you will see a sign for the Point Montara Lighthouse & Youth Hostle.
I turned on in here and this is what I found…
    IMG_4462 sm.jpg

    IMG_4469 sm crp.jpg

    IMG_4454 sm crp.jpg

    How far is it to…
    IMG_4468 sm crp.jpg
Oh well, can’t get to any of those places from here by bike.
    Time to move on North.

Next stop was along the Montara State Beach which is about the last beach before you get to the Devils Slide area of Hwy 1.
Here’s some shots from Montara State Beach.
    Looking North…
    IMG_4470 sm crp.jpg

Those hills and cliffs along the coast in the distance there are what is known as the Devils Slide area of Hwy 1 South of SF.
    IMG_4472 sm.jpg
Every year or two there are landslides that close this section of Hwy 1 for awhile. Last year it was closed for about 2-3 months while they rebuilt a section.

Now for a shot from the other end of Montara Beach. This one looking South.
    IMG_4491 sm.jpg

The North end of Montara Beach is where the Devils Slide cliffs start.
Can you see the fishermen down there?
    IMG_4487 sm.jpg
How about now… zoomed in (11x).
    IMG_4488 sm.jpg
I wouldn’t be going down there to fish!

A little further up you get into the real steep cliff area of the Devils slide.
Here’s a picture of what the cliff’s that the road is cut thru look like.
    IMG_4494 sm.jpg

Just after Hwy 1 turns inland towards Pacifica they are building a new “bypass” for Devils Slide that will (eventually) include a high bridge as well as a tunnel.
Here’s a shot of the beginning construction of the bridge with a photo looking South, with the first span of the bridge visible way across the canyon there.
    IMG_4503 sm.jpg
Check out that guy standing on the skycrane lift arm, barely visible in far left of the photo.
A little (washed out) profile shot of him…

Just after this construction you turn a corner into an unusual eucalyptus tree grove.
    IMG_4506 sm crp.jpg

They don’t want you playing around on the one or two trails in there (where in there are they?).

A couple of corners later and your in Pacifica where I stopped on it’s popular surfing beach and got these shots…
Looking South (the way I came from)….
    IMG_4510 sm crp.jpg

    Looking North
    IMG_4511 sm.jpg

You can also find this mosaic on one of the buildings there
    IMG_4513 sm.jpg

There’s a couple of pretty large buildings on the North end of Pacifica.
    IMG_4518 sm.jpg

Then it was on North into the city.
They sure do build the houses in obvious patterns here.

Then it was on to Fort Funston Beach.

This is a local’s favorite for Dog Walking.
There is also some Military history here going back into the late 1800’s including housing 4 -12 inch mortar bunkers which were later changed to 4 - 90mm antiaircraft guns. It also served duty as a Nike missile battery.
I saw this old Military bunker. Not sure what it housed, but it was obviously well aged.
    IMG_4527 sm.jpg

This is also a hang glider launch and landing zone.
    IMG_4529 sm crp.jpg

I’ve watched them land and launch here a few times. It’s just a matter of stepping off the beach cliff and letting the updraft wind carry you up and away.
Here’s one that was soaring up above. Chasing a plane…
    IMG_4526 sm crp.jpg

There is also a nice view looking south.
    IMG_4524 sm crp.jpg

Some Beach etching art, now gone with the tide.

Then I continued North looking for a place for some sunset shots.
I ended up above the Cliff House next to the parking for trail access down to a couple of Lands Ends well known spots, the Sutro Baths and Point Lobos.
    IMG_4574 sm crp.jpg

Here I sat thru some very cool transitioning of the sunset color transformations.
Here you can see the Cliff House (left side) and one of the old abandoned Sutro Baths.
    IMG_4532 sm.jpg

Another shot of the Sutro baths.
    IMG_4534 sm crp.jpg

See that little spec on the Horizon, above the small rock island in the above photo?
    That’s the Faralon Islands.
    Here’s a max zoom (11x) shot of them…
    IMG_4538 sm.jpg

    And here’s the Cliff House

I got as much as I could from the dwindling sun as it set above the Sutro Baths then remounted to complete this ride. Remember, I was going to San Francisco to join a meeting of some ADVriders at the Zeitgeist.

It had been fairly nice all day with the clouds getting thicker at sunset. That’s what made for some nice colors.
But… they also happened to be carrying a little moisture as I was to find out a little later.
The weatherman had said a “chance” of rain very late in the evening north of SF.
    Wrong again.
The rain started shortly after I had walked into the Zietgeist.

Here’s a few pic’s from the gathering at the Ziet…

We stood outside in our riding gear enjoying the chatter and beers for awhile.
Then we decided it was not going to stop this drizzle so we moved inside where we shared some more stories and rider comraderey before folks donned their riding gear and headed their separate directions.

That’s it for my pic’s from this ride.
    Hope you enjoyed them!

What can I say John, that thread was fantastic.

I really enjoyed the stops you made to show us what is beyond the 20 mile radius that I have never left. You are an inspiration and one of these days I too will venture up the coast like you have. :thumbup

Great pictures, you sure do have a eye for seeing interesting things.

    Thank you. :clapping

Ahhh, the Zietgeist. My FAVORITE bar in The City. Notice the Beemer in the rafters. Love that place.
Great pics too. Glad someone was not watching football today.
