They don't mess around there- lots of videos of them shooting from the cop bike at suspects during chases. And shooting from a helicopter was probably the most famous- about 6 months ago.

That guy better have been a murder suspect to chase him around like that... lots of risk involved.

gotta be hard for the cop to not target fixate too. valiant effort!

When I was in a medium-size town in southern Brasil for a month last summer, we saw quite a few cops riding these bikes. The amazing thing is: Those bikes are REALLY small; they are air-cooled 125s or 230s. There is a reason both Yamaha's and Honda's air-cooled bikes that size are manufactured in Brasil, and it is: they sell a metric ton of them.

The funniest thing we saw was a SWAT team of these bikes going down the street: Cops on air-cooled 125s, flashing red lights front and back, assault rifle on their back, leaning all the way down to reduce wind resistance, and going about 40 mph on a slight uphill. Even with my underpowered rental car I could have overtaken them (but decided that hanging back was much wiser).

Anyone on what we consider a normal sport bike here (of which you see remarkably few in Brasil) or in a car could outrun these guys.

That was not a 230 or smaller Ralph. Probably one of the Rotax powered BMW's the Police have used for decades. Anywhere from 550 CC up to 800 CC's

When I was down there, I didn't see significant numbers of F- or G-series BMW, in particular not by the motorcycle police. Instead lots of scooters, and then the very common air-cooled small machines. Occasionally I'd see a rich person on a 600 or liter sport bike or on a Harley (or Japanese-made imitation Harley). One time we saw two big cruisers (not Gold Wings, Kawi or Yamaha) in front of a restaurant. But then, we were in a medium-size city (1 million people) in a rural and poor state. It's quite possible that the big urban areas like Sao Paulo, Santos, Rio work differently; since police is organized by state there, it's possible that they have BMWs.

Just found a picture from the local newspaper online, of a motorcycle police unit:
    640x480-887dd705ecf34a52fbc40266162ce1ab.jpg
The rest of the article is about the fact that jackets with air-bag technology will be issued to both motorcycle policemen and to motorcycle paramedics, of which the article also has a few pictures.

OK, identified the bike by comparing it to pictures: It's a Yamaha Lander 250, which is also sold as XTZ 250 worldwide. Actually, the wikipedia article says that it was available in a special color scheme in Brasil from a cancelled order from the Sao Paulo state police.
