I spent this past weekend in the southern Sierras, reacquainting myself with some of my favorite roads in the state, and exploring some new ones. You can find my GPS trail of bread crumbs here:

    Saturday: http://connect.garmin.com/zumo/activity/3714127
    Sunday: http://connect.garmin.com/zumo/activity/3714126

Be sure to click on the "Map Player" tab and view the map in "hybrid" mode, it overlays the streets on the satellite image - pretty cool! Zoom in a bit and click play and follow along on my ride.

Some of my favorites on this ride were Auberry Rd / Power House No.1 Rd. Trimmer Springs Rd past Pine Flat Reservoir, my first time here. Naturally, Hwys 180 and 198 through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, to where I spent the night in Three Rivers. Yokohl Valley Dr connecting Visalia with Springville. The "Mighty 190" from Springville to Quaker Meadow where it becomes Western Divide Hwy then down into Kernville. These are all "must rides" when I'm in the area. Caliente-Bodfish Rd from Lake Isabella to Caliente on Hwy 58 (the only structure in Caliente that I noticed was the post office) is another jewel in the area. From Caliente I finally turned for home along more mundane routes, Hwy 58, 229 and 101 (ick - but it was getting late, 5:30 by the time I got to Paso Robles).

I got a late start on Saturday morning because I was indecisive about whether or not to go. But go I did, didn't stop to take many pictures but here's a few. I'll post the rest on my web site in a few days time.

Even up in the mountains the air was rather hazy, much more so than at any other time I've been to the area. I think it might be because of the fire in the Los Padres National Forest that's been burning since July 4.

Western Divide Hwy. The sky was really hazy, not the deep cobalt blue that I'm used to up here.

Thank you for inspiring and showing the way. I have to do this one of these days.

That looks like a lot of fun.

This is my favorite. Nice use of the zoom.

I was really lucky with the temperature. I never felt warm while I was moving; stopping in Lake Isabella was uncomfortable, and again in Paso Robles. Although everywhere I went people kept asking me "aren't you hot in that?" (I was wearing my leathers). Always the same answer: "not as long as I keep moving".

Seems to match my mood lately :devil

    Icabod rides tonite!

Nice stuff! I'd forgotten that you could upload route data to the garmin site and have it chart it. Nifty!

I took a highly simiar route in early May. When I tried to get to Johnsondale/Lake Isabella via 190, I had to turn back because the road was closed for construction. The CalTrans phone line and website said it was open.

I need to go ride Hwy 33 out of Ojai again. Wanted to do it this trip, but it would have taken another day. Plus, that's where the fire is burning so it might not have been pretty :mecry
